PIH is the acronym for post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and it occurs after an injury or inflammation on the skin, such as acne, eczema, or cuts. It causes dark spots or patches on the skin and although it is harmless, it can lower your complexion and self-esteem. The good news is that several techniques can be applied to lighten and fade them with time. In this blog, we are going to explore the best tips and treatments to help you manage PIH and get closer to clearer, even-toned skin.
    What Is Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH)?

PIH is the darkening of the skin due to trauma, inflammation, or injury to the skin. It occurs when there is an overproduction of melanin, which is a pigment that gives skin color.  Increased melanin leads to spots or patches in the affected skin. Though it can be a concern in all types of skin, it is very common and much more apparent on darker-toned skin.

Unlike scars, PIH in Dubai is not permanent, though it may take some time to fade. The extent of this process depends upon skin type, the gravity of inflammation, and how good you are at taking care of your skin.

Things to do to reduce PIH

    1. Sun protection is necessary

One of the most crucial things in fading PIH is protecting the skin from further damage, and the first and most essential thing for that is day-to-day sun protection. UV rays cause PIH spots to darken and they take much more time to fade.

    •     Sunscreen: Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor of 30 or more. Buy sunscreens containing protection against both UVA and UVB rays.
    •     Physical vs. Chemical Sunscreens: If you have sensitive skin, you may prefer to use a physical, or mineral, sunscreen containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, which tends to be less irritating to the skin.
    •     Reapply every two hours: If you are outside or sweating, you should reapply sunscreen every two hours. You can use mineral sunscreen powder for touch-ups during the day.
    1. Topical ingredients to fade PIH

Several active ingredients have been proven to reduce hyperpigmentation in Dubai and accelerate skin healing. Here are some of the most effective:

    •     Vitamin C: Known for its brightening properties, vitamin C helps in reducing melanin production and promotes an even skin tone. Look for stabilized forms of vitamin C In serums or moisturizers.
    •     Niacinamide: Known to lighten, decrease redness, and prevent further melasma, niacinamide is anti-inflammatory and makes the skin barrier stronger.
    •     Retinoids: These include retinol or tretinoin, which enhance cell turnover of the skin. This can lead to the fading of dark spots over time. It may be necessary to begin with a low concentration as it is irritating to some skin types.
    •     Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs): AHAs, like glycolic acid, act as exfoliants on the skin’s surface and promote cell turnover, which lightens any area where dark spots may be appearing, making your skin look brighter and clearer.
    •     Hydroquinone: Hydroquinone is one of the most commonly used skin-lightening agents to treat hyperpigmentation. It works by minimizing the enzyme responsible for melanin production. It’s available in over-the-counter products in concentrations up to 2%, or stronger prescriptions.
    •     Arbutin: This is a milder version of hydroquinone. It is less irritating and works by lightening dark spots and pigmentation. It is commonly found in serums and creams.
    1. Exfoliate frequently

This process ensures that the dead cells are removed, and the skin appears with an even tone. Exfoliation on a regular basis can also cause the dark spots to lighten up much faster because they don’t allow the collection of dead cells, which can easily be highlighted by PIH.

    •     Chemical Exfoliation: Products containing AHAs (like glycolic acid) or BHAs (like salicylic acid) may help exfoliate the skin without the need to scrub. It also addresses acne, one common cause of PIH.
    •     Physical Exfoliation: Mild scrubs or exfoliating tools, such as a konjac sponge or a soft exfoliating cloth, can gently remove dead skin cells, but one should avoid over-exfoliating, as this will only lead to irritation and further exacerbate hyperpigmentation.
    1. Do not pick or scratch

Avoiding the habit of picking on the skin can be considered the best prevention to worsen PIH. Picking and squeezing pimples, itching and scratching, and rubbing over irritated areas tend to damage the skin which enhances dark marks. The healing process of the skin has to be allowed; never pop up acne or inflammation.

    1. Follow up a proper skincare regimen

Fading PIH also requires consistency. Here is a simple regimen:

    •     Cleanser: Use a non-irritating, gentle cleanser that will remove dirt, oil, and makeup.
    •     Toner/Essence: Using a toner with niacinamide or an AHAs exfoliating toner is great to lighten the dark spots.
    •     Serum: Incorporate brightening serum with vitamin C, niacinamide, or both in your skincare routine.
    •     Moisturizer: Hydrating and soothing moisturizer to repair the skin barrier.
    •     Sunscreen: Use broad-spectrum sunscreen every day-both indoors and outdoors.
    1. Medical Interventions for PIH

If the PIH is stubborn or heavy, you may be interested in professional treatments that can accelerate the fading process:

    •     Chemical Peels: A dermatologist can administer a chemical peel that exfoliates the skin immensely and removes pigmented cells, thereby allowing for quick fading of the dark spots.
    •     Microneedling: This is the use of very small needles that cause micro-injuries in the skin, and stimulate the production of collagen while accelerating healing on the skin. It will gradually make PIH clearer.
    •     Laser treatments: Lasers such as fractional CO2 or Q-switched lasers are designed to aim their surface beams at pigmentation and effectively minimize dark spots. Laser treatments need professional consultation and care.
      Patience and consistency Are Important

Fading post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation requires time and proper care. While some treatments are faster, most of them will take weeks to months before the results are clearly evident. So, just keep being patient, adhere to your skincare routine, and let your skin heal properly.

    Conclusion

This hyperpigmentation can be very frustrating, but it is not a permanent problem. There are ways to fade out the dark spots by ensuring a proper skincare routine that encompasses protection of skin from the sun, topical treatment, and professional care. Being consistent is the way forward because caution and patience must accompany treatment to avoid making it worse. With the right strategies in place, you will be able to see smoother, clearer skin with little or no pigmentation over time.
